. A timely, fascinating, and unprecedented look at Hungary under Viktor Orban, who has been much in the news (e.g. on CNN and NPR) in recent years as the "bad boy" autocrat of the European Union. . A timely, fascinating, and unprecedented look at Hungary under Viktor Orban, who has been much in the news (e.g. on CNN and NPR) in recent years as the "bad boy" autocrat of the European Union. Trump has praised him. Liberal Western European leaders have scorned him and his (successful) effort to fashion a democracy in which opposition parties no longer have a fighting chance, in part because he stacked the country's supreme court--sound familiar? Orban, who began his political career in 1990 bravely calling for Soviet forces to leave Hungary, has since not only cozied up to Putin's Russia but has cited it as a paragon of the "illiberal" democracy he's carving out for Hungary and that has taken root in Poland and elsewhere in the region. Some say his heyday as a European leader to be reckoned with is far from over. . Why timely? Because Hungary is an arresting case study of the sort of political divide gripping America as the latter heads into its 2020 presidential election. Skytt's unusual approach--seeking to understand a phenomenon he himself feels discomfort over, seeking to draw bridges (or at least to point the way to such bridges)--carries lessons for all Americans concerned for the future of their own country, no matter who wins the White House in November 2020; and, indeed, for Brits at each other's throats over Brexit. . The debut title by a young Danish journalist, Lasse Skytt, written in English, who has lived in Hungary in recent years with his (Icelandic) wife. Skytt, who is fluent in English and an engaging speaker, resided previously in New York City. He would be ideal as a guest on radio interviews and could speak to why the story of a tiny nation like Hungary matters to America in the Trump era. . A quote from the book: "I have chosen Orbánland as the title of this book to illustrate that we are dealing with a country where the political leader's dominance is so widespread that it reaches almost all elements of society. Many books could be written with similar titles the world over (e.g. Trumpland or Putinland, etc.), and it is safe to say that the election of Donald Trump in November 2016 and the Brexit referendum a few months earlier were both catalysts for me writing this book."
