Autorenporträt
Garrett Putnam Serviss was born on March 24, 1851, in Sharon Springs, New York, to Garret Serviss and his wife. He developed an early interest in science and pursued his education at Cornell University, where he majored in science. Though he later earned a law degree from Columbia University, he did not enter the legal profession, choosing instead to pursue a career in writing and science communication. Serviss became well known as a popularizer of astronomy, using accessible language and imaginative illustrations to explain complex celestial phenomena to the general public. In addition to his nonfiction work, he wrote a number of early science fiction novels, including stories involving planetary travel, space exploration, and speculative scientific discoveries. These narratives combined scientific knowledge with creative vision, contributing to the emergence of American science fiction. His blend of educational rigor and narrative creativity set a precedent for later authors in the genre. Serviss passed away in Englewood, New Jersey, on May 25, 1929, at the age of 78, leaving behind one child, Garrett Serviss.
