The Pattern and Structure Mathematical Awareness Program (PASMAP) is a network of related learning experiences developed for children in the first three years of formal schooling (Foundation to Year 2). It is based on research evidence that the foundation of mathematical development is an awareness of mathematical pattern and structure, and that engaging children in exploring core patterns and their structure leads to an improvement in general mathematical understanding.
PASMAP focuses on developing children's awareness of the patterns and structures that underlie the concepts and processes common to all the early Australian Curriculum: Mathematics strands.
PASMAP Book Two is primarily intended for children in Years 1 and 2.

Joanne Mulligan is an (Hon) Professor of Education in the School of Education, Faculty of Arts, Macquarie University, Sydney, Australia. Her background is in primary school teaching and leadership, pre-service teacher education and professional development in mathematics and science education. Over the past 40 years she has led a range of research projects focusing on early mathematics and science development and teacher professional learning, including large projects funded by the Australian government and education stakeholders. She is renowned in Australasia and internationally for her expertise in early mathematics education research and for her contribution to curricula and assessment, and professional learning programs. Her current research projects include large scale projects in early numeracy, spatial reasoning and statistical reasoning, along with her continued implementation of research on 'pattern and structure' internationally.
Michael Mitchelmore is a former Associate Professor and (Hon) Fellow in the School of Education, Faculty of Arts, Macquarie University, Sydney, Australia. His background is in secondary mathematics teaching, pre-service teacher education, professional development in mathematics education and research in spatial learning. He has directed the secondary mathematics undergraduate and postgraduate programs at Macquarie and has been a consultant to numerous educational authorities, editor of the Mathematics Education Research Journal and Director of the Centre for Research in Mathematics and Science Education at Macquarie University. He is renowned in Australasia and internationally for his expertise in research in structural thinking, measurement and spatial learning. Over the past 30 years, Michael and Joanne have collaborated in a large number of research projects and publications.
