Jessie Redmon Fauset (1882-1961) was a pioneering voice of the Harlem Renaissance-an editor, educator, poet, and novelist whose pen carved pathways for generations of Black writers to follow. As the literary editor of The Crisis, the NAACP's influential magazine, Fauset helped shape the careers of luminaries such as Langston Hughes and Claude McKay, championing the power of Black literature at a time when it was often ignored or suppressed. Born in Philadelphia and educated at Cornell and the Sorbonne, Fauset brought a rare blend of intellectual rigor and creative brilliance to everything she touched.
