The deceitful alien Whitmere heads Project Human but is about to lose his status because results are slow. This could mean death for Whitmere. Whitmere despises his superiors for this and secretly wants control over everything, so he manipulates Barton to get results. He lies to Barton, and the deal is agreed that Barton can be let go once the project is successful.
An added incentive to work faster and also to keep Barton under his control, Whitmere has him...changed. Barton has become something less than human, an experiment himself. Whitmere will give him the cure once Project Human is completed. Barton is helpless now and does their bidding. Then he learns two things that change his course: Whitmere doesn't have his cure, and that he is needed to create an airborne pathogen that the aliens will use on the humans to mutate them and make them kill each other off. Then the takeover will begin.
Barton's conscience gets the best of him, and he's filled with regret. He can't let them win. He must hurry and find a way to stop them. He goes rogue, steals the last two human patients, and starts to work in secret on his own cure so he can escape once and for all. He's made a real mess of their project and put Whitmere's head on the chopping block. He just needs time to figure everything out. But it's too late. The aliens found him.
