Christendom was under threat from, among other things, sinful man, the unrecognised duality of the human condition which pride concealed, the flawed code of chivalry, the violence it promoted and from pagan forces within and beyond its borders. The solution was for a sinful flawed knight to become the new messiah. These stories describe the means of effecting this transformation. They also reveal attempts to reject what were probably seen as a seditious critique of social institutions and a heretical view of the Madonna.The immediate concern of the authors was the violence of knights, epitomised by Gawain, and the vainglory that prevented knights from seeing themselves as they really were. The solution lay in a form of monastic spirituality which enabled Perceval to become the messianic Good Knight and the Guardian of Christendom, but it also required reform of aristocratic institutions and values that gave legitimacy to knightly violence. A new synopsis is included for those not interested in the analysis of the stories.
