Six days a week, he works at the Smokey Mountain landfill in Manila and gets to know the poorest of the poor: Rolf Gugelmann, then 28 years old, lived in the Philippines in 1987/1988 and witnessed people rummaging through garbage, injuring themselves, and falling ill. In his first book, the Swiss author recalls these years. He describes in vivid words the story of a young woman and her baby, Ricky, who grows up in this inhumane place. The author lets the mother talk about herself, her childhood, and her constant worry about her sick child. Gugelmann's photos also bear witness to the conditions at Smokey Mountain. In the second part, the author has compiled information on the subject of poverty.
