Edward Verrall Lucas, often known simply as E. V. Lucas, was a prominent English writer, essayist, playwright, biographer, publisher, and journalist. Born on June 11, 1868, in Eltham, Kent, Lucas nurtured a diverse literary career that spanned several decades leading up to the mid-20th century. A versatile author, Lucas wrote over 100 books, including children's literature, essays, and books on travel, such as 'Roving East and Roving West' in which he chronicled his impressions of travels to places like India, Japan, and the United States with an engaging wit and insightful commentary. Well-travelled, Lucas' writing often showcased his keen observational skills and gentle humor, making his works appeal to a broad readership. His literary style is marked by a clear, unpretentious, conversational prose that reflected his genial personality. Lucas served as the chairman of the publishing house Methuen & Co., and he contributed to book selections for the firm. He also held the role of assistant editor for the iconic satirical magazine 'Punch'.
