Dylan isn't sure how he feels about being a vampire. Even in Benton-Worthy, where werewolves, gnomes, zombies, and many other types of creatures coexist, most people treat him like an outcast. He lives on the streets, spending all of his time hiding from the sun and looking for food, which is awfully hard to come by for a vampire who's not willing to kill people. In an effort to improve their situation, Dylan and his friend Wiggins decide to sign up for the fights at the Rookery where they meet a vast array of other individuals struggling with life. Some are friendly, some are rude, but they're all in the same boat. Five fights, that's what Dylan agrees to. Five fights and he'll be on his way with enough money to help him get back on his feet. Five fights...They tell him the last one is a real killer, but he's not worried. He probably won't survive that long. Sometimes funny, sometimes sad, too often brutally violent, Dylan's story could be that of any young person just getting started in the world.
