The choices we make today determine not only our future but also that of the generations to follow. These choices weigh heavily on those of us who face oppressive circumstances, where law and order, meant to serve and protect, often become the architects of how far we can go in life. This story is a tribute to the many young girls who, rather than receiving the education they deserve, are forced into marriages with men old enough to be their fathers. These are the girls who carry scars of abuse, neglect, and shattered dreams, but whose stories demand to be told.

At the heart of this tale is Seibatu Bockarie - a girl of remarkable strength and academic brilliance during our school years. Though this story is fictional, Seibatu's character is a reflection of someone I deeply admire, someone who has beaten the odds to graduate from the University of Sierra Leone (FBC). Like Seibatu, countless girls across our country possess the intelligence and potential to excel, but their dreams are often cut short by the harsh realities of life.

This book centers on the character of Battu Bockarie, a young girl with a passion for education and an unwavering dream of becoming a medical doctor. Battu admired the nurses in their white uniforms, and in her heart, she longed to don the doctor's white coat. She was kind-hearted and soft-spoken, with a calmness that endeared her to those around her. But fate was unkind. Her father passed away when she was only eight years old, leaving behind emptiness that no one could fill. Soon after, her mother fell gravely ill, and Battu's dreams began to unravel before her eyes.

As her family's financial situation worsened, the intervention of Pa Kallon, a wealthy village man, only made matters worse. Instead of offering the help Battu needed to continue her education, he crushed her dreams further. At just 14, she became a wife, and later, a mother of nine children and a grandmother of two. The bright future she once envisioned - a life filled with learning and healing slipped away, replaced by a life of unfulfilled dreams and endless sacrifice.

Though Battu's story is fictional, it resonates with countless real-life tales we have seen or heard in our communities. It serves as a reminder of the untapped potential that lies within so many young girls across Sierra Leone and beyond - potential that is too often extinguished before it ever has the chance to flourish. In recent years, laws have been enacted to ban child marriage, creating a safer environment for girls to thrive and pursue their dreams without fear. Yet, much work remains to be done.

Battu Bockarie may not have become the doctor she once dreamed of, but her life took on a different kind of significance. Through the retelling of her story, Battu has become a healer in another sense - a beacon of hope for others who walk the same path she once did. She has become a symbol of resilience and an advocate for change. In her village, she is no longer remembered as the beauty queen or the mother of nine; she is a symbol of endurance, whose tragic journey sparked a movement that would help shape the future for countless other girls.

Autorenporträt
Alusine Mansaray is a Sierra Leonean writer, educator, agriculturalist, and social development advocate. The tension between tradition and transformation has shaped his life. With a Master of Science degree in Agricultural Extension and Rural Sociology and a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture from Njala University, Mansaray has spent years working on issues related to community empowerment, food security, and social reform in both rural and urban contexts.

Beyond the fields of agriculture and humanitarian service, he is a passionate thinker and storyteller. His writing explores the intersection of culture, religion, and identity, often drawing from personal experiences and collective memory to interrogate inherited systems.

As a poet, teacher, and reflective observer of African life, Mansaray writes not to preach, but to provoke thought. Scars of the Strong is one of his boldest works to date, a deeply personal and socially conscious critique of a complex institution many fear to examine.

He lives in Freetown, Sierra Leone.
