"It can't be done." Except they were already doing it. "It's not realistic." But it was reclaiming independence.

In 1990, among the beautiful Blue Ridge foothills, service dog complexity was skyrocketing. Skilled trainers faced tough reality with not enough solutions. When a remarkable group of dogs demonstrated an unheard of capability, a handful of coworkers set out to create a new kind of partnership...and the struggle was on. Proving their concept would take a lifetime and cost them everything along the way. But they couldn't give up on a dream. In an epic contest between love and limits, the dogs were the ultimate proof. They were lifelines. They were magic to the struggling. They were teachers to their trainers. They were Shepherds of our Hearts.

Heartwarming tales of triumph and heartbreak showcasing German Shepherds, Labradors, Golden Retrievers, mixes, and rescues during the years following the implementation of the Americans with Disabilities Act. Follow a close-knit group of dedicated trainers through a multi-decade arc as they move from brash young idealists to veteran traIners and pioneers into new and controversial fields of canine work. Get a behind-the-scenes glimpse of nonprofits like most have never known.

Autorenporträt
Julie Nye established a life-long interest in dogs, horses, and storytelling before she started kindergarten. After college, she converted her growing dog expertise into volunteer involvement with multiple service dog organizations, eventually becoming a trainer, a board member, and the co-founder of a specialty program for training dogs to work with autistic children. She has been a freelance writer since 1986, with a variety of books through different publishers. Nye makes her home in Michigan with two German Shepherds: Voelker, a retired service dog, and Ajo, a young upstart with absurd amounts of energy.
