Caught sleeping in the wings, Joe bargains by working backstage to work off his debt. But the sadistic assistant manager sees him as nothing more than a stray to humiliate. As time passes he is forced into degrading roles under the threat of being cast back onto the streets. However it is still a place to return to, a place that he finds comfort, among the people he knows, who expect him for who he is. What Joe feels as punishment becomes transformation. Joe turns mockery into drama, winning over the crowds. But not everyone wants to see this rise. When the manager dies in a street accident, Mr Dunstan's frustration and disappointment boils over when a new manager arrives, and he is demoted. When a sudden death and a bitter replacement puts Joe's arch nemesis, Mr Dunstan, on probation, tempers explode. In broad daylight, on a crowded street, a knife is drawn, and everything unravels. "It is in the court room, where Joe's true identity is exposed." Last last line change.
