In the third installation of the Northern Narratives series, Tall Tales of Alaska Sitka, AK: Where Cultures, Customs, and Countries Collided, you'll journey to the western edge of the Inside Passage to Sitka, Alaska, where the tides of history crashed ashore, leaving their indelible mark.

You'll be immersed in the layered past of a city that has been both rugged and regal, both Russian and American, and has always, always, always, been Alaskan.

You'll witness the first encounters between the Tlingit people and the Russian settlers, stand at the cross roads of an empire's rise and fall, and experience the pivotal moment when Alaska became part of the United States.

But the journey doesn't stop there. These tales will then sweep you away to modern-day Sitka, where history intertwines with the present. Explore Sitka Sound's sunken ships, relive the final eruption of the Sound's resident volcano, and visit the town's cherished animal sanctuaries: The Raptor Center and the Fortress of the Bear.

And just like before, Northern Narratives doesn't require you to be a historian to enjoy our stories. But, the past is impossible to ignore in Sitka. It is visible in the buildings that line its streets and etched into the totem poles that populate its parks, and Tall Tales of Alaska Sitka, AK: Where Cultures, Customs, and Countries Collided brings this history to lifeone unforgettable tale at a time.

Autorenporträt
W.R. Kozey was born in Saskatchewan, Canada, but has spent most of his adult life on the move. In 2017, W.R. met his wife abroad, and they spent the first four years of their relationship in transit. Every winter they'd find a new place to live: Mexico, Peru, Thailand, India, but Juneau would always home.W.R. and his wife would come back to Alaska's capital in the summer time to work seasonally while the cruise ships were in port. However, during the pandemic, they made Juneau their permanent home, purchasing their house in the shadows of the Mendenhall Glacier.Since the two settled down, W.R. has gone back to school, graduating with his Master's degree and pursuing a PhD. During his studies, W.R. taught in a variety of disciplines including public health, history, and English composition. He enjoys all the courses he's taught, English composition being his favorite, but he would like to eventually transition to Creative Writing.Besides teaching, W.R. has moonlit as a curriculum developer, platform development specialist, and data liaison for research institutions as well as the state. But, if you ask him, his favorite side gig is bartending. It was bartending that helped him travel the world; helped him learn the craft of story telling; and the source of his inspiration for his first book: Tall Tales of Alaska: The Red Dog Saloon.
