Mahatma Gandhi, who had a law degree from the United Kingdom, believed in resolving disputes through peaceful means. He supported ideas that are now part of what we call Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR). He once said,
"I had learnt the true practice of law. I had also learnt to find out the better side of human nature and to enter men's hearts. I realized that the true function of a lawyer was to unite parties riven asunder (meaning "divided by some issue").
He thought it's better to settle things without going to court, using conciliation and mediationpeople talking things out instead of fighting in court. He liked it when people avoided conflict and found harmony.
