Autorenporträt
Arrian, born around 86 AD in Nicomedia (modern-day Turkey), was a Greek historian, philosopher, and statesman. He came from a wealthy family with Roman citizenship, which helped him rise in the Roman administration. As a young man, he studied under the Stoic philosopher Epictetus and later recorded his teachings in the Discourses and Enchiridion. His political and military career thrived under Emperor Hadrian, who appointed him to key positions. He served as consul around 130 AD and later became governor of Cappadocia. During his governorship, he successfully defended the region against invading Alans.Arrian is best known for Anabasis of Alexander, one of the most reliable accounts of Alexander the Great's campaigns. He also wrote Indica, a work describing India and Nearchus's Persian Gulf voyage. His writings remain vital to our understanding of ancient history and military strategy.
