In a world recently freed from disease and war, a new problem has laid its full weight on humanity's survival. Above Halifax, Nova Scotia, in Canada, the world's healthiest and most progressive city, three gigantic generational ships now hover - a gift from the mysterious race UDoor, a beacon of hope in a world teetering on the edge. The arks belong to all of humanity, and they offer a simple journey for 3 million people to a place where the Earth can be rebuilt. What was meant to free humans from a dying planet's iron grip turns out to be both truth and lie. Humans, in their hubris, want as many of their own as possible, and overpopulation quickly becomes an obstacle. With unity comes threat, and with threats comes war. In all its idiocy, the warring parties almost manage to destroy the entire concept of taking a new step into the unknown. It will take hundreds of years before the ships are ready to leave the solar system. They travel in relative luxury under the captain's watchful eye and a sophisticated AI that sees what the captains miss.
Despite the seemingly invincible armada, it is not immune to the unexpected. Human nature, with its greed and hunger for things that do not belong to her, is just a small part of the problem. The losses are staggering, and when one does not blame an incompetent crew, one goes after those one believes may be the cause. And then, from the darkness, emerges a surprise that no one could have foreseen. As the Crystal Planet looms on the horizon, it becomes a pivotal point in the story. The planet promises everything one has longed for: luxury, a new lifestyle, but also secrets whose origins are far more profound than one could have imagined.
