Australian bush poetry at its best... entertaining and thought-provoking.
Comical antics and diabolical yarns as told through the eyes of Dinkumous J. Dodger, a true blue Aussie larrikin, are outrageous, provocative and hilariously funny.
Political correctness is swept aside and daring opinions are openly expressed to challenge governments, politicians, and international conspirators. Probing questions are posed about political motivations, foreign manipulation, and Australia's place in the world.
A sample of Dodger's cheeky humour starts with this shocking event.

THE CROOKED WILLY WONGLE

On the farm it's proper when men have need to pee,
they never use the thunderbox but go behind a tree.
And cousin Fred in great relief was shaking off the drops,
when Blue that mongrel cattle dog bit his willy off.
We took him off to hospital.
The nurses...

Well that's just the beginning of the story...

As a young country lad growing up in rural Australia, the yarns are humorous and light-hearted, with pranks and practical jokes aplenty. A childhood from a by-gone era is brought to life with scenes from the schoolyard to the dust of an outback station.

SCHOOL DAYS

"Why was ya late young Dodger?"
the ageing teacher asked.
"Tis very nearly smoko time!
Stand up and tell the class."

"Why was ya late young Dodger?
The second time this week!
And as it's only Tuesday
should I give ya tail a tweak?"

"Or does ya have a good excuse
for why ya wasn't 'ere?
Stand up young man and tell the class.
Speak up so all can hear."

"Please Sir, well...

His excuse was brilliant, but not quite believable and ended with some unpleasant and hilarious consequences!

As Dodger matures he is unafraid to form his own opinions... This excerpt expresses disgust at the machinations of Australian and international politics.

POLITICAL PERSUASION

By the shores of Burley Griffin,
'neath the shadow of the flag,
where public servants mill around
and prattle on and brag
about their petty conquests
and complain about their woes,
where power-hungry peasants
strut in thousand dollar clothes,
where the wealth of a once great nation
is squandered and flittered away,
You're as far from real Australia
as anyone could say...

Along the way there are poetic protests concerning basic human rights and social injustice and speaking out for what we believe! Dinkum Dodger's view on some of the world's big questions are addressed.

HEAVENLY PERSPECTIVES

At times I can't but wonder why
people starve and children die,
and men fight wars and kill and maim,
and no-one knows just who to blame.
Who pulls the strings? Who makes the plans?
Who sets the course of life for man?
...

Often nostalgic, harking back to the simplicity and old world charm of a century past, the Days of Dinkum Dodger Volume 1 will cause you to 'laugh and cry, and to wonder why'. For a good giggle or a stark reminder of the state of the world, the poems of John Saomes are sure to entertain and amuse.
