Alongside Quaker hospital attendant Walter Sinclair and his conscientious objector cohorts, Edward conspires to sneak out damning evidence of abuse and corruption to the press. To do his part, Edward must rely on his faithful visitor Mary to convey his sketches of hospital atrocities to their parish priest, while keeping her innocent and in the dark.

Edward's baffling downfall alienates him from family and sets his sister Mary on a mission to figure out how his promising life went so awry. While Edward struggles for justice with his mind intact a world away, Mary grows up following clues like breadcrumbs on the trail to a dark truth about her brother's fate and its connection to the wages of family secrecy and the nation's shame.

He makes a choice. She makes a vow. They make a pact.

Autorenporträt

Professor Emerita Kathleen J. Waites is a Philadelphia native, former nun, author, scholar, and public speaker. In addition to her numerous academic book chapters and journal articles, she is the author of "Particular Friendships: A Convent Memoir." Centered on her four years as a nun in the turbulent 1960s, it was a 2007 honoree of the Broward County Library's Literary Feast, along with such authors as John Dickerson, Susan Cheever, and Ishmael Beah. "The Faithful Ones: A Novel," based on a true family story and set on the Homefront during World War II, is her debut novel.
