- The gods do not smile at those who neglect the ancients: The gods show disdain towards those who do not pay attention to the ancients. They express their anger at their suspicious self-absorption. They express their disapproval towards those who are not bothered by "the dishonor of their fathers and grandfathers." The gods in this gloomy scene waived their condition: "You must not turn around," to come with an alternative condition: "And to pass through a world filled with calls that deafen your ears, turn toward the hissing sent by the ancestors so that you may be worthy of their companionship." Every reader of ancient culture today stands against oblivion in front of the graves of the dead, places a wreath of roses and departs with humility and shame. Every interpretive effort to awaken the dead (and make their echoes extend against annihilation) becomes a magical ritual of evocation that makes them more or less contemporary with us.
