Breaking Free from Judgment: How Christ, Paul, and James Call Us to Mercy For too long, Christianity has been burdened by judgmentalism-by a rigid, legalistic faith that measures worthiness through human-made standards rather than divine grace. But is this what Jesus truly intended? In The Heart Set Free, Matthew B. Scraper embarks on a theological journey to uncover the radical message of mercy at the heart of the Gospel. Drawing deeply from Romans 14, James 2, and the teachings of Christ, Scraper challenges modern interpretations of righteousness and morality. Through Paul's defense of Christian freedom, James' insistence that mercy triumphs over judgment, and Jesus' command to love above all else, this book dismantles the illusion that faithfulness requires the policing of others. With a powerful blend of scriptural exegesis, historical insight, and personal conviction, The Heart Set Free makes the case that true faith is not about legalism, but about honoring God in the way we live. It is an invitation to embrace a faith defined by grace, to reject the burden of judgment, and to step into the liberating love of Christ. If you've ever wrestled with questions of moral certainty, Christian liberty, or the weight of judgment in the church, this book will challenge and inspire you to see the Gospel in a new light-one where love reigns, and hearts are truly set free.
