Renowned American writer Mary E. Wilkins Freeman made significant literary contributions in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Freeman, who was born in Randolph, Massachusetts, on October 31, 1852, was raised in Vermont before relocating to Brattleboro. She had little formal schooling, but she went on to become a well-known author and prolific writer in American literature. The novels and short tales of Freeman that focus on the lives of rural New Englanders are her most well-known works. Her artwork frequently portrays the difficulties women have in a society that is going through social and economic change.
