Palestrina (Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina, ca. 1525-1594) war einer der bedeutendsten Komponisten der Renaissance. In Palestrina nahe Rom geboren, wirkte er als Sänger und Kapellmeister u. a. an Santa Maria Maggiore und über viele Jahre an der Sixtinischen Kapelle. Sein Werk umfasst über 100 Messen, zahlreiche Motetten und geistliche Gesänge. Palestrina gilt als Meister des polyphonen Stils, dessen klare Linien und harmonische Balance die Kirchenmusik Europas nachhaltig prägten.
