Two American soldiers and an Italian partisan take advantage of the chaos as Milan falls to the Allies in May 1945. They murder a priest who guards the Holy Nail that has been worshiped in the Duomo for sixteen hundred years. The soldiers try to sell the stolen sacred relic quietly, but the theft arouses the police, the Church hierarchy up to its most revered levels, and the Mafia. Eventually, the Holy Nail is smuggled into Brooklyn, NY, where it remains undetected for generations. The rebuilt Duomo continues to perform its annual Holy Nail ceremony, unwittingly worshiping a copy crafted by an artisan. It is an inspiration. Michael Serby was born in Brooklyn and raised in Savannah. He now lives in Upper Manhattan. His short stories focus on the individual's struggle with the tension between religious and cultural identity and on the struggle to survive in a hostile world. He is fascinated and frustrated by the rejection of reason and reality in the twenty-first century.
