Produktbeschreibung
Amara Vance, a traditionalist architect, arrives in Lagos, Nigeria, to restore Blackwood Mansion, hoping to redeem her reputation after a past professional setback. She believes in honoring the past, seeing old buildings as living entities with stories to tell. Her serene focus is disrupted by Kelechi Thorne, a charismatic rival known for his radical, modern approaches to historical preservation, which Amara views as architectural sacrilege. Their contrasting ideologies immediately clash, particularly concerning the mansion's crumbling conservatory.

Their rivalry is complicated by Chief Okoro, the mansion's trustee, who reveals a covenant in the original will requiring two lead architects to work in full collaboration; failure to reach consensus or abandonment of the project will halt the restoration indefinitely. This forces Amara and Kelechi into a reluctant partnership.

While working, they discover a hidden compartment containing an antique locket and a faded letter from "Olanna" in 1908, hinting at a secret and "grave peril" concerning the mansion. Following a clue in the letter, they find a second, thicker letter and a collection of photographs in a hidden iron box by the mansion's dilapidated fountain. This second letter, written by the original owner, Chief Dapo Blackwood, reveals a century-old widespread corruption in the mansion's construction, where contractors used substandard materials and falsified reports.

This discovery forces Amara and Kelechi to undertake a comprehensive structural audit, exposing critical weaknesses in the western wing's foundation. They confront Chief Okoro with the evidence, and he mandates a full excavation and replacement of the compromised sections, transforming the project into an act of historical justice.

During the arduous excavation, they uncover Olanna's diary, which reveals that she and her lover, Adebayo, an honest engineer, actively documented the fraud and were silenced for their efforts. The discovery of Adebayo's confession, detailing Olanna's sacrifice and a ledger of illicit payments, leads to a public reckoning for the implicated families, forcing them to make reparations and establish a foundation in Olanna and Adebayo's names.

Throughout the project, Amara and Kelechi's professional relationship deepens into a personal bond. The grand unveiling of Blackwood Mansion is a triumph, showcasing a seamless blend of historical restoration and modern integration. The book concludes with Amara and Kelechi acknowledging their love and deciding to build a future together, their relationship as strong and enduring as the restored mansion itself.
