Bones Hooks became one of the greatest bronco busters and horse trainers on the High Plains, known in the Trans-Pecos region and all of Texas. But his legacy went far beyond his cowboy heritage becoming a man of the people and the leader of his race in the Texas Panhandle. Through his greatness, he was able to step over racial barriers, however, he denied himself privileges that other Blacks were not permitted to enjoy. The only privileges he would not give up were his membership in the White cowboy and pioneer organizations. He was noted as a peacemaker between the races, a homespun western philosopher, town builder, and social and civic minded in the community working relentlessly to achieve better things for his people. His efforts were evident at his death as the Black and White community joined together to pay homage for a life lived few could compare.
