Wilkie Collins (1824-1889) was an English novelist, playwright, and short story writer best known as a pioneer of Gothic and detective fiction.Born in London, he was the son of landscape painter William Collins and grew up in an artistic environment that nurtured his imagination. After studying law at Lincoln's Inn, Collins was called to the bar in 1851, though he never practiced seriously, choosing instead to pursue a literary career.Collins's early works, including Antonina (1850) and Basil (1852), gained modest attention, but his friendship and collaboration with Charles Dickens proved pivotal. He contributed stories to Dickens's magazines Household Words and All the Year Round, and the two co-wrote several theatrical pieces. Collins achieved major success with The Woman in White (1859), a gripping tale of mystery, identity, and deception that established him as a master of suspense.His later novels, such as No Name (1862), Armadale (1866), and The Moonstone (1868), further cemented his reputation as one of the finest writers of the 19th century. The Moonstone is often regarded as the first full-length English detective novel.Despite declining health and an addiction to laudanum, Collins continued to write well into his sixties, exploring themes of social injustice, gender inequality, and moral ambiguity. He never married but maintained long-term relationships with two women, Caroline Graves and Martha Rudd. Wilkie Collins died in London in 1889, leaving behind a legacy that shaped the development of modern mystery and psychological fiction.
