Rowan Lindsay gave her best friend a look that warned her that it wasn't a good idea to laugh at her decision.

You heard it, Melanie. I'm going to spend some time away from men. No dinners, no dates... no disasters.

Of course, Melanie laughed anyway.

"Go ahead, laugh at me all you want," Rowan replied, scanning the antiques on display in the store before adding, "But when you're done laughing, I suggest you find a man in all of Detroit who won't run away when he finds out the woman he's having dinner with is the mother of five-year-old twins."

Okay, okay, I understand. But don't you think your decision is a bit too far-fetched, even for you?

That was easy enough for a happily married woman like Melanie to say. Rowan hadn't made that decision because she didn't want romance; in fact, she was dying to find one. However, after analyzing her disastrous history with men, starting with her first kiss at thirteen, the answer to her question was a resounding "no." She wasn't being exaggerated at all.

The truth was, sometimes, when she thought about her own life, she felt like screaming. She loved Abby and Mac with all her heart, but they were two tough kids. The past year had been tough on everyone, and Rowan had survived by slaving away at her Aunt Celeste's antique shop, struggling to keep from going under with the twins' constant pranks. She glanced under the table where she'd last seen them and saw...

They had disappeared!

As she placed the duster on a desk, Rowan took a deep breath and tried to quell the wave of panic that was welling up inside her.

Melanie, please check the back room to see if the children are there while I look around here.

"Don't worry, I already know the procedure," her friend assured her with the resignation of someone accustomed to having to search for traces of little ones.

He knelt on the floor to look under all the furniture.

Abby... Mac, the game's over. Come on, get out of wherever you are.

Come on, I'm warning you, if you don't get out of there right now... Has he lost a couple of kids?

Rowan froze at the sound of that unfamiliar, deeply masculine voice. She turned her head without standing up or turning around completely, leaving her in a rather undignified position. Before her eyes lay a pair of worn cowboy boots, and on either side of them, two pairs of sneakers she immediately recognized because she'd washed them countless times. She couldn't help but feel a certain relief.

"I'm afraid I'm responsible for these two pieces of junk," she confessed, resting her head on the floor. It was then that she realized how inappropriate her position was; with her back to him like that, she could see where every single one of the unnecessary calories she ingested without the slightest guilt ended up. Fortunately, dignity had never been a particular concern for her. She stood up and looked at the gentleman with a shy smile she'd learned to use with the twins' successive victims. Normally, all this hostility made her mumble in a hushed voice.
