Is "The Other Cairo" a memoir or a biography of a life at one stage of this life? It can be asserted that Rachid Yahyaoui did in fact experience the narrative in "The Other Cairo." However, the nature of the narrative, which refers us to various diaries, memoirs, and autobiographies, places us before the act of writing, as a narrative game, as methods of construction, and as the narrator's guidance of his narrative towards what is narrated to him. The image of this narrative remains vague and abstract, even though it grants the narrator/character/self a mysterious ability to endure and continue the experience of living, as well as to continue the experience of storytelling. "The Other Cairo" appears to be a text free from the readiness of gender, its boundaries, and its categories, because it is an experiment in writing the self in the city (Cairo), and writing the city (Cairo) in particular and through it. If the text is the same, it poses the following question: Is the focus of writing in "The Other Cairo" the narrator's experience during his travel to study in Cairo, or is it Cairo itself as a city of magic and seduction, and a distance for penetration and association?
