Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930)
Sir Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle was a Scottish writer and physician who grew up in Edinburgh. He was educated by Jesuits and studied medicine at Edinburgh University between 1876 and 1881 before opening his own practice in Portsmouth in 1882. Whilst waiting for his practice to grow, Doyle began writing fiction. With 1887's A Study in Scarlet, Doyle created Sherlock Holmes, one of the most famous literary characters of all time. He died of a heart attack at the age of 71.
