When Alzheimer's disease had completely overtaken my mother, she still remembered - in her own way - the years she served as a corrections officer at the women's prisons of Averoff and Korydallos. She might not have remembered who I was, where she lived, or even what time period we were in, but she often spoke - using their first names - of dozens of inmates, both criminal and political, with whom she had once shared her days. And as she relived "the years of duty" as a jailer, I was forced to relive them too, since my childhood had been marked by repeated visits to "mom's workplace." Our shared journey toward her inevitable end - the delirious monologues and our daily conversations, seen through the distorting lens of the illness - were preserved in two densely filled notebooks. Now, I don't know whether they amount to a confession disguised as fiction or fiction disguised as an autobiographical confession.
