Caine enjoyed exceptional fame throughout his lifetime. He published fifteen novels on infidelity, divorce, domestic abuse, illegitimacy, infanticide, religious prejudice, and women's rights, becoming a worldwide literary celebrity and selling 10 million copies. He spent his boyhood holidays with family in the Isle of Man. At the age of seventeen, he spent a year as a schoolmaster in Maughold. After that, he returned to Liverpool and began a career in journalism, eventually becoming a leader writer for the Liverpool Mercury.
