The Sentinels.

As society shifted in ways that unsettled conservative values-rising polarization, eroding traditions, and deepening distrust in institutions-a clandestine brotherhood took shape. They called themselves "Sentinels." Patriots, not vigilantes-correctors. They saw themselves as surgeons cutting out the rot in the system.

They were former military intelligence officers, hardened by combat, who believed they were witnessing the slow decline and unraveling of their nation. United by disillusionment, they swore an oath, not to their government, but to their own vision of America's salvation.

Their leader, a charismatic man with natural command presence, inspired loyalty. Using high-end encryption and military experience, they operated in absolute secrecy-communications untraceable, identities masked. Their mission: identify and neutralize what they saw as corrupting forces steering their homeland toward ruin.

Dan Murphy, a private investigator with a knack for stumbling into trouble, never meant to cross their path. His latest case, a seemingly straightforward drug overdose, should have been simple. But hinted at a far more complex shadow group, operating behind the scenes.

Another PI had already stumbled onto the group, compiling a thick file of findings. But his incoherent ramblings were unhelpful, only deepening the mystery. Dan, reluctant to get involved, became a pawn in their plans. A near-fatal shooting leaving him in a hospital bed. He barely registered the crack, the first bullet missed. The second tore through his shoulder, he returned fire. The acrid smell of gunpowder hanging in the air.

The police assured him the shooter was a lone extremist. Case closed.

Dan's gut instincts said otherwise. Someone was pulling the strings.

Now recovered but haunted, Dan tries to move on, back into work, but the paranoia lingered. His house feels insecure. Shadows seem to shift when he turns his back. Every quiet moment is punctuated by the uneasy sense of being watched.

What Dan doesn't know. The Sentinels are watching and waiting. Deciding their next move.

Autorenporträt
Author

J. C. Keenan.

I was young when I discovered science fiction. I had been a voracious reader ever since I could pick up a book. I was in awe of authors; the process of writing a novel seemed daunting. Over time, the curiosity about whether I could actually write, and the process of writing stayed with me.

The origin of this novel lay in a conversation I had with a work colleague. Many years ago, sitting in a restaurant in Sydney, Australia. We were both interested in science fiction, and bounced ideas off each other for fun. One idea sowed the seeds for this book. I was curious if I could actually write a sci-fi novel. I began to slowly piece together the story.

The book started well. I was writing after work and weekends, when I had time. Like all projects, it ran into difficulties. I moved to three countries, and five different places to live. The book moved with me. I lost my laptop; another broke, thankfully I had a backup. Initially, what I envisaged would be a relatively quick and easy process, turned into a lengthy project. I lost interest, then returned to the book, I hit the inevitable writers block. A number of years later I found time, and finally managed get the book finished. Thank you for taking the time to read it. I hope you enjoy the story.
