Imagine, for a moment, two travelers walking on opposite ridges of a dark valley. It is a deep night. They cannot see the path beneath their feet, nor the destination ahead. But each carries a lantern. For hours, they walk in total isolation, the darkness pressing against their skin.

Then, the path turns. The ridges narrow. For a span of perhaps a hundred yards, the travelers come close enough that the glow of one lantern bleeds into the glow of the other. In that intersection of light, they see each other's faces. They see the weariness in the eyes, the dust on the coat, the determination in the stride. They are no longer walking through the dark alone; they are walking within a shared circle of illumination.
