Along with his closest friends, Fenwick Greensong and Palan Keentrack, Nova devises a plan to bring them all closer to their fallen friends: he will build a spaceship, powered by the sensory magic of touch, sight, sound, scent, and voice. After devoting a lifetime to celestial research, Nova is well prepared to do the impossible.

But before the spaceship is completed, a second attack on the city forces Nova and his friendsalong with a small childto flee. They launch prematurely and instead of finding themselves among the stars, they crash on a strange, volcanic island.
