What if the life you built with love and devotion vanished in a single, heartbreaking moment?

In The Sweetest Light, memoirist Gerry Becker recounts the true story of unimaginable loss and the quiet, determined path back to hope. In 2005, a tragic plane crash in the mountains of central Idaho claimed the lives of her husband, Bill, and their two sons, Ben and Andy. In the aftermath, Gerry and her daughter Emily were left to navigate the weight of grief, the silence of an empty home, and the long road toward healing.

Blending vivid family memories, reflections on motherhood, and heartfelt stories of resilience, The Sweetest Light honors not just those who are lost but the enduring legacy they leave behind. Gerry shares moments of love, parenting, building a home, and outdoor adventure, illuminating how the deepest sorrow can coexist with the richest joy. Through shared meals, quiet hikes, and bittersweet milestones, she paints a portrait of family that is unshakable, even in absence.

This grief memoir resonates with anyone who has faced personal tragedy and still dares to find light on the other side. A tribute to love, loss, resilience, and remembrance, The Sweetest Light is both a heartfelt family memoir and a powerful story of healing.

Read it and rediscover the light in your own story.

Autorenporträt
Gerry Becker was raised in southeast Idaho. She studied elementary education at the University of Idaho; she spent an additional eight semesters between the University of Hawaii (Hilo) and the University of Massachusetts (Amherst). After graduating with a degree in Elementary Education from U of I, Gerry taught for 20 years in Idaho Falls, where she and her husband Bill raised their three children. Gerry wrote The Sweetest Light as a personal history and reflection on her role as a daughter, wife, mother and teacher. Since becoming a mother, Gerry compiled family stories and pictures each year to share with her children's grandparents; this book is a continuation of that tradition marking the familiar experiences of raising "decent kids." Also, this book shares the farless familiar in the form of a life-changing tragedy. Together, The Sweetest Light serves to both honor her family-those living, those lost-and her personal journey through grief, which continues to inspire her to find meaning and purpose on the other side.
