The Thread to Tanglaw
A Folklore Novel of Fireflies, Memory, and Myth By JM Luna
In the heart of Kalipayan, beneath the gnarled arms of a balete tree, a spring glows with a light older than moonlight. It remembers the names that others have forgotten. It sings in silence. And it waits.

Mayi and Sinta, two sisters bound by quiet grief, once laughed at their mother's storiestales of fireflies carrying souls, of spirits weaving bridges from memory. But ever since their mother, Lila, vanished without goodbye, the stories feel closer. Heavier. True.

Each night, the fireflies grow fewer. The spring begins to dim. Children in the village forget her name. Even the priest stumbles over his morning blessings. The world seems to be forgetting Lilaand with her, something sacred is unraveling.

Then, one evening, a single firefly returnsbrighter than the rest, pulsing like a question. It leads them into the forest, where the veil between worlds thins. There, they meet Kalina: spirit-weaver, babaylan, and their mother's grandmother.

She tells them the truth.

Lila did not leave them by choice. She was dying. When the spirits called her to Tanglaw, the realm where remembered souls cross in peace, she refused. She could not bear to abandon her daughters, so she bound herself to the spring, hoping memory would anchor her. But now, the sacred land is under threat. The developers come with maps and blades. The fireflies vanish. The bridge to Tanglaw falters.

If the spring is erased, Lila will not pass onshe will vanish.

And the spirit world will lose more than one soul.

In the growing dark, a creature stirs. The Tiktik, with eyes like blood and wings that never touch the ground, hunts the fading. It feeds on forgotten names and broken songs. Elsewhere, a Tikbalang watches in silence, waiting for someone who remembers the old ways.

With only each other, a fading guardian, and the help of friends who half-believeElmer the quiet musician, Kata the grieving skeptic, and Ramon, who carries a message he doesn't understandMayi and Sinta must unravel the threads of myth before they break completely.

This is a story of spirit huts and river stones. Of mothers who linger and grandmothers who weave light. Of sisters, memory, music, and the fierce beauty of remembering.

The Thread to Tanglaw is a poetic and powerful folkloric novel set in the lush heart of the Philippines. 🕯️ Rooted in babaylan wisdom and spirit lore, it invites readers into a world where forgetting is the greatest dangerand remembering is an act of love.

For fans of The Bear and the Nightingale, The House of the Spirits, and anyone drawn to magical realism, lyrical prose, and the ancient light of ancestral stories.
