THE AUTHOR AND ILLUSTRATOR Martinus van Tee is a versatile South African illustrator, animator, and caricature artist known for his humorous and whimsical creations. Born in Johannesburg, Martinus honed his artistic skills at the National School of Arts in Braamfontein before relocating to the Western Cape in 2011. His work, deeply inspired by folk music, blues songs, and the vibrant people and landscapes of the Western Cape, often features creamy gouache on watercolour paper as his medium of choice. Martinus's talent extends beyond illustration; he is also an accomplished animator. His most recent animated short, "Best Bud Blues," inspired by his beloved pet pooch, has been showcased at various international animation festivals, earning him recognition in the global animation community. As a freelance illustrator and caricature artist, Martinus has entertained guests at hundreds of events across South Africa with his quick-draw caricatures, capable of sketching up to 25 caricatures an hour. In addition to his event caricatures, Martinus is a dedicated children's book illustrator, bringing strange and whimsical creatures to life on the page. When he's not illustrating or painting animals in Victorian finery, he enjoys dabbling in animation and voice-over work, often delighting friends and family with his playful impressions.
