The concept of the Turning draws inspiration from the StraussHowe Generational Theory, which proposes that history moves in cycles, each lasting roughly 80 to 100 years and divided into four generational "turnings": the High, the Awakening, the Unraveling, and the Crisis. This volume centers on the Awakeninga time of spiritual unrest and cultural reckoning. It follows an era of material progress and radical individualism, which, though once celebrated, has led to fragmentation, alienation, and quiet ruin. Institutions have hollowed, meaning has thinned, and the self has become both sovereign and stranded.
Yet within this unraveling lies the seed of renewal. The Awakening is not just a reactionit is a renaissance. A return to inner life. A rediscovery of connection, purpose, and the sacred. It is the moment when the Sleeper stirs, and the possibility of transformation begins.
Opposing this awakening is Velora, a shadowy presence in the narrative who seeks to erase memory itself. Her mission is not destruction, but preservationof illusion, of control, of the status quo. By severing people from their past, she ensures they remain trapped in a cycle of repetition: new actors, same rules; new paradigms, same controls. In her world, forgetting is a form of survivalbut also enslavement. Her efforts to suppress memory are a direct attempt to prevent the Turning, to keep the Sleeper sedated and the system intact.
Future volumes will explore the remaining Turningsthe Unraveling and the Crisisas the cycle deepens and the consequences of awakening unfold. Each phase will bring new challenges, new voices, and new reckonings with the Sleeper within.
This is not just a story. It is a mirror, a rhythm, a state of mind. It is an invitation to remember, to resist forgetting, and to recognize the Sleeperand to choose, perhaps for the first time, to wake up.
