Autorenporträt
Venerino Poletti is specialized in both respiratory medicine and anatomic pathology. He started his career as a surgical pathologist before becoming a clinician after 8 years. However, he didn't abandon his first interest, and continued to run the bronchioalveolar lavage (BAL) and cytology laboratory at the Dept of Pulmonology of the Maggiore Hospital in Bologna, Italy.  His investigations cover a wide field: complications in patients with HIV infection; the role of BAL in the detection of malignancies; new radiologic features in diffuse parenchymal lung diseases; the definition of clinico-radiologic and pathologic aspects of bronchiolitis; the role of TBNA in the diagnosis of sarcoidosis; the identification of pathogenetic events in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis; and lastly new, less invasive methods of performing lung biopsies in patients with diffuse lung diseases. He introduced endoesophageal ultrasound (EUS) investigations by pulmonologists in Italy, and is an internationally recognized expert in transbronchial cryobiopsy. He is Head of the Department of Diseases of the Thorax at the GB Morgagni Hospital, Forlì (I) and Full Professor of Respiratory Medicine at the Aarhus University (DK).
