The story is told through the voice of the character "I", a young, curious and adventurous person. When hearing news of a treasure buried in a deserted temple in the mountainous region of the Northwest - a place rumored to have a "blood curse" and a vengeful spirit guarding it - the character decides to set out to explore with his close friend Dung. That journey opens up a series of events that are both thrilling and horrifying, where greed, fear, and human survival instincts are pushed to the limit.
Th¿ L¿ has been very successful in creating a mysterious atmosphere that covers the entire work. From the descriptions of nature - deep forests, big rivers, the sounds of wild animals, darkness and moonlight - to the thrilling details such as human skeletons, strange cries in the night or mysterious blood stains, all are described with a delicate voice and intense rhythm. It is the combination of poetry and horror that makes Gold and Blood a short story that is both mysterious and breathtakingly attractive.
Besides the adventure element, Gold and Blood also contains a profound message about life. Gold - a symbol of greed, is the cause of tragedy. Blood - a symbol of sin and retribution, is the price to pay for those who cannot resist material temptations. Th¿ L¿ not only tells a thrilling story but also conveys a moral philosophy: in the journey to find treasure, the most frightening thing is not the devil, but greed and betrayal within humans.
It is noteworthy that Th¿ L¿, who came from the New Poetry movement, brought the lyrical and emotional style of poetry into the short story, creating a space that is both real and virtual. The language is rich in imagery, the narrative rhythm is flexible, combining narrative, description and suspense, making Gold and Blood an exemplary work of the Vietnamese mystery genre.
