What's Got Into Geronimo? is an excellently crafted Scottish crime thriller in the film noir mould and laced with sharp dialogue, sardonic wit and colourful and quirky characters. Chaos is never far away.
Charlie Brock is a world-weary sports journalist at Scottish national newspaper The Daily News. He accepts he may be a slightly flawed individual, but he also reckons he has been gifted the sort of cynical outlook and shrewd observational skills which should aid him in his fantasies of becoming a sleuth in the manner of Humphrey Bogart as Sam Spade or Philip Marlowe in the Chandler and Hammett whodunnits.
Failing that, Brock wouldn't mind being feted as a best-selling author.
A mystery wrapped in murder, mirth and mayhem
In the midst of the agonisingly slow and inevitable demise of the newspaper print industry, veteran hack Brock has strived to maintain his sense of humour. It is often put to the test.
He is worried about a dramatic change of personality in his good friend Gerry Nimmo, also known as Geronimo, a once jovial editorial executive at the News. As Brock searches for an answer, he is drawn into a world of bent cops and dodgy characters in Glasgow's Underbelly where a brutal murder occurs.
Oh, and there is also the discovery of a priceless work of art.
Small-time crook Benny The Frog, top cop El Cid and chief news reporter Rest In Peace are introduced as the intrigue builds.
For Fans of Smart, Gritty, and Humorous Fiction
If you love Scottish noir, hard-boiled detective stories, and newsroom thrillers, this book delivers it all; crime, satire and revelation, wrapped in the eccentric atmosphere of Glasgow pubs and newsroom carnage. Alex Gordon's storytelling combines suspense, humour and humanity, creating a story that is as enjoyable as the unconventional cast.
