Drawn from the well-used selection of Cook and Marchant, edited by Anthony Bowen, this book contains classical Greek texts with English preliminaries. Cook and Marchant published their Passages for Unseen Translation in 1898. The selection, from both Greek and Latin authors, has proved useful ever since. In this revised edition, the original 200 pieces of Greek prose and verse have been cut down to 120, and the order of the pieces has been changed to better suit a contemporary student's progress during A-Level and beyond. Prose and verse alternate, but each follows its own gradient of difficulty. The first selection was distinguished by the wide range of authors in time and matter (though standard authors predominated) and by the intrinsic interest of the pieces. There is an index of authors, including their approximate dates. The texts have been checked against recent editions where these exist, and revised in line with current scholarship.
