Schafik Handal was a guerrilla commander in El Salvador in the 1980s and led the peace negotiations that finally ended the 12-year war in that country. He became the leader of the FMLN, El Salvador's main left-wing political party, and was a presidential candidate in the Salvadoran elections of 2004. He died on January 24, 2006.
